New youth project launched in North Solihull to support young people and tackle violence

20th June 2025

Young people in Solihull are set to benefit from a brand-new youth project and a mobile youth bus—bringing support, fun activities and youth workers to their doorstep.

The new initiative in Smith’s Wood, North Solihull, will provide a welcoming space for 8 to 17-year-olds to connect, create, and grow. With youth workers on hand during term time, young people can get advice on everything from mental health and job skills to everyday wellbeing.

Each week, the project will host a packed schedule of activities like games, sports and creative workshops that build confidence and life skills.

A new youth bus will roll out across the community, supporting pop-up events, workshops, and outreach sessions wherever young people gather.

The initiative is jointly funded by the West Midlands Violence Reduction Partnership and Solihull Council, demonstrating a strong commitment to investing in young people’s futures.

Olivia, attendee of the youth club and design inspiration for the youth bus, said:

“It’s amazing that me and my friend Taylor’s designs have inspired the look of the youth bus – it’s brilliant to see it in real life!

“I’m so happy and proud to be part of something that will help other young people.”

Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands, Simon Foster said: “Initiatives like these are essential, to tackle the root causes of crime and anti-social behaviour.

“By providing young people in Solihull with positive opportunities, safe spaces, and trusted mentors, we are empowering them to make better choices for their future.

“This project is a testament to the power of partnership working, and I am pleased to support an initiative, that will strengthen community bonds and create lasting change.”

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Annette Mackenzie, said:

“It was fantastic to be at the launch to see these youth clubs opening their doors in the north of the borough. Spaces like these give young people somewhere safe, supportive and fun to spend time outside of school.”

Councillor Wazma Qais, Cabinet Member for Communities at Solihull Council, said:

“Youth clubs aren’t just about fun – though that’s certainly important – they’re about creating the right environment where young people can express themselves, make friends and feel part of their local community.

“Whether it’s learning something new, getting help with a challenge, or spending time with trusted youth workers who care, clubs like this can make a huge difference.

The project is being delivered by Urban Heard in partnership with Winnr Sport and Fitcap, ensuring a diverse and engaging programme that meets the needs of young people in the area.

Dr Rowan Mackenzie, CEO of Urban Heard said: “I’m so pleased that we have launched the Smiths Wood Youth Project as there is a real need for activities and safe places for young people in the community.

“Having over 30 young people here for the launch alone shows just how much they value our groups.”
